Ligzda is organized as a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization that supports and promotes cultural, ethnic, religious, educational and artistic activities for Latvians in the Chicago area. Its location is home to more than a dozen Latvian organizations including dance groups, cultural organizations, choirs, a radio station, a library, schools, church parish and more. Ligzda is open to its neighbors and surrounding community with public events as well as space available to lease out to other cultural and ethnic organizations and for private small to large gatherings, performances and varied events.
Situated on nearly 4 acres on the Northwest side of Chicago, Ligzda has provided a home to Krisjanis Baronis Latvian School of Chicago, which is the largest Latvian school in North America, and the Latvian Zion Lutheran Church, which has been active for more than 125 years in the Chicago area. The Chicago Latvian Cultural Organization that has organized hundreds of Latvian cultural events in the Chicago area.
As manager of the property on West Montrose avenue, Ligzda is supported by user fees, donations by organizations and individuals and dozens of volunteers. Latvians have been very active in the Chicago area since World War 2 and have continued to cultivate and share their culture and values since that time. During the years of Latvia’s occupation by the Soviet Union between 1939-1991, Latvians continued to thrive here in the Chicago area. The existence of Ligzda is a testament to Latvian values of sacrifice and survival.
