The Chicago Latvian Folk Dance group. Mantinieki, was formed in 2016.g. to continue the Latvian folk dancing traditions. Depending on the season, the group usually has between 25 and 30 performers. The group leader is John Velkme. The Mantinieki have performed both regionally and globally. They participated in the Latvian 100 Year Independence celebration in Riga in 2018, as well as performing in the Latvian Song and Dance Festivals in Baltimore, Toronto and St. Paul. Most recently the Mantinineki performed in the 2023 Latvian Dance Festival in Riga. The Mantinieki have performed in many concerts in Chicago, as well as Michigan, Texas and Florida. They are very active in charitable events, as well. During a recent fundraising event, the Mantinieki were able to raise $10,000 for Humanitarian support in Ukraine. Practices occur every Wednesday at the Latvian community center, Ligzda.
